Comparison of the Prevalence of Dry Eye in Soft Contact Lens Wear and Corneal Refractive Surgery
Kim Jeong-Mee

Abstract
Purpose : To compare the prevalence of dry eye between soft contact lens wear and corneal refractive surgery respondents based on the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire.

Methods : A survey was conducted through questionnaire with university students. Also, a control group consisting of emmetropes was used to compare the two groups. Dry eye was assessed using the OSDI questionnaire. Dry eye according to the OSDI score was classified as mild (13~22), moderate (23~32), or severe (33~100).

Results : 62 respondents in contact lens wear group, 49 respondents in refractive surgery group, and 68 respondents in the control group were included. The OSDI scores in both groups were higher than that of the control group, but there was no statistical difference in the prevalence of dry eye between contact lens wear and refractive surgery groups. Diagnosed dry eye was 53.2% (n=33) of respondents in soft contact lens group, 53.1% (n=26) in refractive surgery group, and 30.8% (n=21) in control group.

Conclusion : In the present study, the prevalence of dry eye in both soft contact lens wear and refractive surgery was more than 50%, higher than in the control group, and the prevalence of dry eye in the two groups was almost the same.
